Press Release For Immediate Release January 27, 2010 Oklahoma City Surgeon Assembles Team for Haiti Relief EffortDouble Harvest is an organization that has been working in Haiti for many years. This group has built a village with a tilapia farm that serves as support for residents of the area. Double Harvest has had clinic facilities to serve its area for some time, but their function has become much larger in recent days. OKC Surgeon, Dr. Houshang Seradge is leading a team to help fill the new demands at the facility
Oklahoma City, OK (PRWEB) January 27, 2010 -- In his daily update from Haiti, Frantz Angus tells us “Improvising is our new word at Double Harvest. The front part of the clinic is used as pre-op and ’triage’ area. Our nurses and doctors are almost working around the clock. The clinic is so full; we have had to open 3 classrooms and the gym to accommodate patients. The whole cafeteria was full of people needing help today. We needed some orthopedic drills. We had to take the cordless drills from the community to drill our way to bone for external fixators.” He continues, “The bad thing with all this is the amount of patients taken care of during the first days when there was a lack of medicine and sanitary conditions. They are developing infections. Today we had to amputate two feet and a leg because of situations like that.” In addition to the patients that are being treated, busloads of orphans are also arriving daily at Double Harvest. Mr. Angus reported that just this week so many orphans arrived it was impossible to make an accurate count. Oklahoma City Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Houshang Seradge and his medical team have volunteered to go to Haiti to care for injured children and adults at Double Harvest. Dr. Seradge said “Our team wants to go and help as much as possible.” Double Harvest is working to put together additional teams that will rotate into this community northeast of Port-Au-Prince. Each team will attempt to add to the equipment and supplies in the hospital. To this end, we are asking your help in sending supplies with our OKC team. Dr. Seradge and his group need medications, especially antibiotics, orthopedic tools and implants and external fixation equipment, bandages and all other supplies for performing orthopedic surgery and first aid. 100% of any monetary donations will be used to purchase antibiotics and additional supplies. All monetary donations and medical supplies can be donated to the Oklahoma Foundation for Orthopedic Health which is a 501-C3 public, not-for-profit organization. Your donation is 100% tax deductible. Because our team will be leaving as soon as possible, there is urgency to our effort. Double Harvest is an organization that has been working in Haiti for many years. This group has built a village with a tilapia farm that serves as support for residents of the area. Double Harvest has had clinic facilities to serve its area for some time, but their function has become much larger in recent days. For Immediate Release July 21, 2009 Oklahoma Surgeon Presents to Gathering of World’s Leading Hand Specialists (Oklahoma City, OK) - Local Orthopedist, Dr. Houshang Seradge, was recently invited to present to the Forty First Congress of the Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand. The Congress was held in Poznan, Poland in June and included world renowned Physicians from across Europe, Asia, and the United States. The European Federation of Societies for Hand Therapy is a non-profit organization representing 1800 therapists all over Europe and established for the purposes of sharing scientific experience and research with hand surgeons and allied professionals dealing with hand patients. “It was a great honor to present to some of the leading orthopedic surgeons in the world,” said Seradge. “It was also an incredible opportunity to share information about the new techniques and technologies that are now available for physicians when treating conditions that in the past challenged them.” Dr. Seradge lectured on three topics. He presented his Carpal Tunnel Decompression Exercises along with a study that showed significant reduction in workplace injuries and associated employer costs. An Oklahoma City plant with 250 employees experienced a fifty nine percent reduction of Repetitive Trauma Disorder (RTD) after implementing Dr. Seradge’s decompression exercises. They have been used on five continents and their utilization continues to increase. The public can request an instructional brochure and workers in industrial settings can receive education free of charge. Another presentation reviewed the fifteen-year follow up of Dynodesis, a procedure designed by Dr. Seradge in Oklahoma for the treatment of Dynamic Scaphoid Instability. This is a surgical procedure for treating a problem with a ligament in the wrist. The wrist has eight bones arranged in two rows and the scaphoid connects these two rows together. This study showed the effectiveness of the procedure as it provided long-term pain relief, improved grip strength and hand function in patients. The human hand can make a fist and hold objects. This is because of flexor tendons that bend the fingers. Flexor tendons can be cut and when repaired they have a 20% failure rate on average. Dr Seradge designed a technique that does not require knots when using stitches to repair the cut tendon. The long term result of this technique has been excellent as patients were able to start active finger movement the first day after surgery. Dr Seradge presented this technique to the hand surgeons of other countries for their use. The technique has been published and named the “The Oklahoma Repair Technique” by Dr. Seradge in honor of this great state. Dr. Seradge has published 63 articles and given 120 lectures across the United States and internationally. Dr. Seradge is one of our local Physicians keeping Oklahoma City in the forefront of medical advances. Media Contact: About Orthopedic Institute
